Dr Nektarios Mazarakis, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and specialist in complex spinal disorders and neuro-oncology, works in close collaboration with neuropsychologists within multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings. This holistic approach enables a comprehensive analysis of complex cases, integrating neuropsychological data to enhance diagnostic accuracy, treatment individualisation, and clinical outcomes in neurosurgical patients. The collaboration also improves the prediction of cognitive effects from surgeries or neurological conditions, thereby reducing complications and supporting recovery.

What is the role of neuropsychological assessment in Neurosurgery?

Neuropsychological assessment helps neurosurgeons understand how a brain problem affects a patient’s thinking, memory, and behaviour. It acts like a detailed “brain check-up” that identifies subtle weaknesses which may not be apparent through physical or sensory examination alone.

What does it assess?

The assessment explores key brain functions using simple standardised tests that measure attention, memory, spatial perception, and decision-making ability. For example, a patient might be asked to recall a list of words or draw specific shapes to detect possible deficits caused by a tumour, stroke, or head injury. It typically lasts 1–2 hours and is conducted by a neuropsychologist in close collaboration with the neurosurgeon.

When is it needed?

In neurosurgical patients, such assessments are performed both before and after surgery—such as in cases of tumours or aneurysms—to help avoid damage to critical brain areas, for example those responsible for language.

Why is it important?

It assists in diagnosis, predicts recovery, and supports personalised rehabilitation strategies, such as memory training exercises. For the neurosurgeon, it provides essential data that guide intraoperative and long-term decisions, such as planning the patient’s gradual return to work.
